SPIRIT OF NATURE – Werkbeschreibung
Ausgehend von der sakralen Aura und Geschichte des ehemaligen Stifts Pöllau entfaltet sich das Werk zu einem atmosphärischen Klangbild über den Geist der Natur – jenes ewigen, lebendigen Prinzips, das sich dem Zugriff des Menschen entzieht und doch alles durchdringt. Mit dem Machtwort Kaiser Josefs II. wurde das Kloster einst aufgelassen. Was bleibt, ist der weitläufige, sakrale Raum – das Gotteshaus – und die Natur. Sie verändert sich, sie wandelt sich, aber sie wird immer sein.
Die Musik führt aus dem Inneren des Klosters hinaus in die offene Landschaft, in eine weite, klingende Welt – eine Welt, in der die Natur zur Kathedrale wird. Dort malen die reichhaltigen Farben des sinfonischen Blasorchesters eine lebendige Szenerie: das Rufen der Vögel, das Summen der Insekten, das Rauschen des Windes – eine lautmalerische Annäherung an das, was den Menschen übersteigt und dennoch zutiefst berührt.
Das Werk beschreibt – gleichsam klanglich – den Weg, den auch die Besucher des Konzerts genommen haben: vom Stift hinaus in die Natur und wieder zurück. Am Ende kehrt die Musik zum Ursprung zurück, verklärt sich in einem erlösenden Akkord – und lässt spüren, dass es zwischen Himmel und Erde mehr geben muss, als der Mensch begreifen kann.

SPIRIT OF NATURE – Work Description
Starting from the sacred aura and history of the former monastery of Pöllau, the piece unfolds into an atmospheric soundscape about the spirit of nature – that eternal, living principle which eludes human control and yet permeates everything. With the decree of Emperor Joseph II, the monastery was once dissolved. What remains is the vast sacred space – the house of God – and nature itself. It changes, it transforms, but it will always endure.
The music leads from the interior of the monastery out into the open landscape, into a vast, resonant world – a world where nature becomes a cathedral. There, the rich colors of the symphonic wind orchestra paint a vivid scenery: the calls of birds, the buzzing of insects, the rustling of the wind – a tone-painting approach to what transcends humanity and yet deeply touches it.
The work – in a way sonically – describes the path that the audience itself took: from the monastery out into nature and back again. In the end, the music returns to its origin, dissolving into a radiant final chord – and allows one to sense that there must be more between heaven and earth than human beings can comprehend.
A commissioned work of the Styriarte Festival 2025, premiered in the atmospheric fountain courtyard of the former Augustinian monastery of Pöllau by the Musikkapelle Pöllau under the direction of Rainer Pötz.
